SmallPayroll.ca Privacy Policy
I wanted to create a simple privacy policy that didn't need a lawyer to understand.
We are custodians of your data
- The data is yours. We're taking care of it.
- We take all reasonable measures to safeguard your data, including encrypting the data as it goes over the Internet, backing up data, and making sure you are the only person accessing it.
- If you want to leave, we'll be sorry to hear that, but you can expect our full cooperation in getting your data to you, should you want it.
- Yes, we can see anything you've uploaded. But we promise to only use this power where necessary to fix problems. For example, if you ask for some help, we'll probably have to look at what you've done.
- We will not share anything about any of our customers without their permission. The only exception is under a court order.
Data retention
- We will keep customer's payroll records around for 7 years as mandated by law, unless you ask us to delete it.
- "Around" doesn't necessarily mean "online". We reserve the right to archive old data.
- Trial accounts that don't sign up are deleted in June of the year following expiry. That is, if you sign up in August 2010 and don't continue after the trial, the account and associated records will be deleted in June 2011.
Technical stuff
- We use cookies in your web browser to track your session across our site. This is necessary for the application to work.
- We use third party services, such as Google Analytics and conversion tracking pixels to track when certain events, such as a sale or signup, happen.
- We log lots of information, including (but not limited to) IP addresses and intermediate results of payroll calculations. These logs are used for tracing problems, and are treated just as payroll data (except they aren't kept for 7 years).
- We use various cloud services. Any data on a non physical machine is protected from access at the application level, and may be further encrypted (as in the case of Social Insurance Numbers) within the database (see "Is SmallPayroll.ca secure?" for more information.)
